Br. Guy Consolmagno, SJ, Speaks to Jesuit Alumni and Friends of Detroit

November 16, 2017 — The Jesuit Alumni and Friends of Detroit hosted Jesuit Brother Guy Consolmagno, director of the Vatican Observatory, on Oct. 13 at the Detroit Athletic Club. Br. Consolmagno delivered remarks about "why we do science" and the intersection of science with faith. He also answered questions from the sold-out audience.

Br. Consolmagno was born in Detroit and attended the University of Detroit Jesuit High School before earning bachelor's and master's degrees at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, both in planetary science. He went on to obtain his Ph.D. at the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory. Known as "the Pope's Astronomer," Br. Consolmagno was named by Pope Francis to be the director of the Vatican Observatory in 2015.

The Jesuit Friends and Alumni Network’s (JFAN) purpose is to gather those who share a commitment to the Jesuit mission and a desire for the spirituality of St. Ignatius to inspire their lives. The various JFAN clubs encourage those shaped by experiences with Jesuit institutions and ministries to answer the call to be men and women for and with others.

August 14, 2018 — Let us pray in thanksgiving for the life of Fr. Thomas "Tom" C. Widner, SJ, who was called to eternal life on August 13, 2018. Tom died at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, Ind. He was seventy-six years old, a Jesuit for almost thirty-three years, and a priest for forty-nine years.

August 10, 2018 — If Dr. Seuss wrote the biography of St. Ignatius of Loyola, it would look like “Audacious Ignatius,” a new children’s book created by two longtime Jesuit educators.

August 6, 2018 — Let us pray in thanksgiving for the life of Father Charles "Chuck" F. Burns, SJ, who was called to eternal life on August 2, 2018. Chuck died at St. Camillus, in Wauwatosa, Wis. He was eighty-one years old, a Jesuit for almost fifty-four years, and a priest for forty-six years.

August 6, 2018 — Last month, 61 refugees in Kenya and Malawi earned diplomas from Regis University through the Jesuit Worldwide Learning program.

July 26, 2018 — Father Urmston received a proclamation from the City Council of Cincinnati for his peace and justice efforts on June 27.
