April 12, 2017 — For many people, food is very much a part of the Lenten experience — whether it’s a meatless Friday dinner, a parish fish fry, or saying goodbye to chocolate for 40 days.
For Fr. Timothy Kesicki, SJ, president of the Jesuit Conference of Canada and the US, his mother’s Friday evening meals during Lent are among his greatest childhood memories.
His mother cooked unique dishes from her own childhood, recipes that she brought with her from Italy. “We grew to love those meals,” Fr. Kesicki says.
He still tries to make it to his mom’s for at least one Friday meal during Lent. Her dinners, he says, helped him realize that giving something up isn’t merely doing without. “It’s a change of life, it’s a change of focus, it’s an intentionality.”
